There was utter silence as the Last Post was played during Middleton Grange’s opening of the ‘Field of Remembrance’ on Tuesday 21st April. Those of us who were invited to the special event were humbled by the stories we were told of New Zealand’s soldiers and were honoured by the presences of a platoon of servicemen who came to be a part of our Commemorative Ceremony. The thirty white crosses, symbolising thirty of Canterbury’s fallen men and women, provided a tangible reminder on our own field of those who fought for our nation miles from home.
