Middleton Grange is an inclusive community, working hard to ensure those needing language assistance feel well supported. All pupils are tested on arrival and placed in classes according to their results.
Primary School
Years 1-6
Support during classes, with possible one-on one support, as required.
Middle School
Years 7-8
Combined ESOL class – 2 periods per week. Possible one-on-one support, as required. Additional subject language support, as required.
Year 9
ESOL Class – 3 periods per week. Possible one-on-one support, as required. Additional subject language support, as required.
Year 10
ESOL Class – 4 periods per week. Possible one-on-one support, as required. Additional subject language support, as required.
Senior College
Year 11
ESOL class – 4 periods per week
Possible one-on-one support, as required

This programme includes some English Language credits and some NCEA Level 1 English credits.
Year 12

There are two classes depending on pupils’ level of English
1) ESOL Class – 5 periods per week
Year 13
ESOL Class – 6 periods per week
These pupils gain 16 Level credits of Level 2 NCEA English, which gives them minimum literacy for University Entrance. They can also study for IELTS which is the English entry requirement for some tertiary institutions. A major emphasis of this programme is preparation for tertiary study. Pupils learn how to carry out research and how to produce a research report.
